Best Way to Use in Different Timezone

Postby ioiiooo » Thu Sep 13, 2007 7:24 am

I am travelling from the US to Great Britain this week and would really like to use my PhotoTrackr to geotag my new photos. My question is, what's the best way to keep the camera time and GPS time in sync while accounting for the different time zone (I want the times on my photos to reflect the local time zone in Britain, not my home time)?

There are different ways to deal with Timezones.

1. If you sync your camera prior to your trip, then as long as you don't change your camera time during your trip, you will get the correct date and location info when you come back to your original timezone and download the photos and GPS data.

2. If you have your laptop with you while your travel, you can also re-sync your camera again when you are in different timezones (you will need to adjust the timezone in your laptop also).

3. If you happened to re-sync your camera while you are in a different time zone, and you download the GPS data and photos when you are back into your original timezone, the photos might be out-of-sync. However, you can right click on the photos and click re-analyze and the program will ask you what timezone were those photos being taken. Then you can select the correct timezone info to re-analyze the images.

It would be handy to have the ability to timezone-shift an entire log file in a future version.

Since you can't change the time-zone of the log-file currently, you can instead change the time of the images. Several tools will let you do this. I know of Exifer (free) and Adobe Lightroom (not free).

Yeah, I use Lightroom for that. My concern was more about after I timezone-shift the photos in Lightroom, it would be nice to also be able to timezone shift the log files to match for future uses.

Will this be able offset the data log?

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert

I noticed it has a "Time offset: "

I have dealt with this in the past by setting my camera to GPS time (basically UTC time), then I can do the geocoding in RoboGEO with no time offset.

It would be great if the GiSTEQ software would allow the GPS time option for people who are going to travel and cross multiple timezones. The current option of setting your camera to the local timezone is fine only if you're only taking photos in that timezone.

Just to be sure: I will be travelling from Europe (UTC+1) to the USA (Las Vegas UTC-7).
At home I will get a fix for the DLP-700 and GPS time which will be UTC+approx 14secs.
My Nikon D300 has the ability to set time and time zone so the camera will be set at UTC+1 (Europe)

If I arrive in Vegas I will only change the timezone of my D300 to the local zone which will be UTC-7.
The actual time on my camera will remain UNCHANGED. I will take photos which will have the actual local timestamp.
The logging on the DLP-700 will still take place based on GPS time+approx 14 secs.

When I get back I will change the timezone on the D300 back to European time, which will have no impact to the photos or logs.
I will add the images in the Phototrackr software and will select the Las Vegas (UTC-7) timezone.
The photos can then be matched with the GPS logs and the right location can be determined.

Is this correct? If so then I will only need to allign the timing once, before the trip!

Theo.
