Requesting a simpler downloader without activation

Postby rented » Sat Aug 18, 2007 5:04 am

Dear Gisteq. Please consider this request.

I did not buy the PhotoTrackr for the software to tag images, but for its tracking/logging feature. I use other software for the actual tagging of images. Normally I wouldn't mind the extra features added to the software. It is a little bloated for me but I see the value of it for others, if nothing else.

However, with software activation this is a whole other issue. I have a home computer, a regular laptop, and a smaller travel laptop. I need to be able to download the logs from all three computers. This activation is bothersome, even if it worked. Now, however, the activation doesn't even work properly. It has asked me for activation almost every single time I load the program. Fortunately, so far it has allowed me to re-activate it with the same details. But what do I do when I'm in the field with no internet connection??? What will it say when I try to activate it on another computer?

What is really needed is a separate application to just download the logs, view the GPS time and change the user preferences on the tracker. This application should be usable without activation.

I am going to Africa soon and will be following the great migration. I bought the unit to track this trip, and I DON'T want to be in the position of not being able to download the logs because of some silly activation procedure.

Please!

My system requires activation everytime I run the program. To do that, it needs Internet connectivity. A separate downloader would solve part of my problem.

schreinereiner mentioned the software itrack-u in this post. I tried it, and so far it works fine. It allows you to download and convert the log in one go. Just don't touch the buttons on the right side of the app :)

So, that can be used in emergencies. That only leaves the GPS time. Since all I get is "Uh Oh" when I try to get the unit to read out the time, this is essential for me to sync the camera's time with the GPS time, of course.

I just wish it were once activated on that machine it should never require a connection again. In my case GISTech said I used 4 machines but in reality it is the exact same machine just their system when I connect to my VPN Internet connection it thinks this machine is another one. It is fatally flawed in the activation, software problems, and the hardware design falls apart.

What PhotoTrackr does is cool and helpful but if another brand comes out on the market I will go try that solution as a replacement due to the lack of responses from GISTech and problems. I am not considerering the Sony device. The new SPOT personal tracker looks way cool but no mention oif photostamping or exporting of GPS trails and tracks. It can show a realtime location to others on the web without a cell phone. I am somewhat intersted in that device after seeing it listed on ENGADGET where I found Phototrackr.

My needs are a rugged portable GPS recording or reporting device that can record tracks and waypoints traveled and then later tag photos with location.

We'll update the activation program which shows more detail information during the activation process, so it may help solve the activation problems some of you are having. Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

I have NOT been able to activate the Phototrackr software even once, The software is never able to connect to the activation server at all!!!
I fail to understand the necessity to register the software (or not able to use it without registering) which should be left to buyers option. Did anyone figured out a way to get around this, :( just getting bugged up!!
